Kitchen Safety Tips
Counters and Cabinets:
Install safety latches on all cabinets that are within your child's reach.
Move your trash can under the sink and behind a locked cabinet or securely lock your trash can so it can not be accessed by your child.
Keep appliances that are on your kitchen counter top unplugged and with the cord wound up.
Move all cleaning products and alcohol to an upper cabinet and make sure that it is secured with a magnetic cabinet lock.
Store all pots and pans away in a locked cabinet, this can prevent your child from seeing them as toys when you are using them for cooking.
Remove knives from the knife block on your counter top and store inside a locked drawer.
Be aware of knives, coffee cups or food plates that may be in reach of your child from the counter top.
If you keep a cupboard with Tupperware products for your child to play with, make sure that it is located well away from the oven.
Appliances:
Make sure to install locks or latches on all major appliances (oven, refrigerator, trash compactor, dishwasher).
Remove stove knobs and place them in a drawer or use knob covers.
Insure that all sharp objects (knives, forks) are pointed down inside your dishwasher.
Dish washing detergent is dangerous to your child, it should only be poured in just before washing your dishes
Refrain from using small refrigerator magnets on your refrigerator as they could be a choking hazard for your child.
When cooking make sure to use your back burners and turn all pot handles in.
Check to see that when the oven door is down position that the oven can not tip forward and fall when pressure is applied.
General:
Beware of salt, 1-1/2 tablespoons can be lethal to a 25 pound child.
Keep a fire extinguisher mounted to the wall and know how to use it.
Do not use place mats or tablecloths as your child can pull on them and bring anything that is on them down on themselves.
