Bedroom Safety Tips
Furniture:
Never allow your infant to sleep on an adult bed, waterbed, or on any surface not specifically designed for infants.
Organize the electrical devices on night stands and bedroom furniture (alarm clock, lamp) so that the cords are out of sight and inaccessible.
Remove all items from your nightstand and bedroom furniture that may be a hazard to your child (medication, jewelry, manicure tools).
Install cabinet locks or latches on furniture that can be accessed by your child.
Anchor all tall or unstable furniture to the wall to prevent them from being pulled on to your child.
Furniture should not be placed under a window to prevent your child access to it.
Closets:
Remove any dry cleaning bags from your clothes, these can pose as a suffocation hazard to your child.
Use bi-fold door locks on all bi-folding doors to prevent pinched fingers.
Keep closets clear of any items that may be hazardous to your child.
Fire and Health:
Install a smoke detector in every bedroom and on every story of your home.
Have a fire escape ladder in every bedroom on the upper floors.
Install a carbon monoxide detector on each level of your home and near the bedrooms.
Keep a fire extinguisher near all sleeping areas and know how to use it.
Have a fire escape and disaster plan and practice it with your family.
General:
Use sliding outlet covers on all electrical outlets in the bedroom.
To be able to see in an emergancy have a flashlight on hand with spare batteries in your bedroom.
Use sliding door locks on all bedroom doors to prevent your child accessing them unattended.
